August 2007 marks the 50th Anniversary of Camp Hermosa on its present site, after 27 years on rental sites. In 1957, a small group of devoted camping ambassadors, including Ernie West, Joe Godwin, Arno Kelly, Mrs Norman Dabbs, Rev. Ken Gillespie, Rev. Hugh Stewart, Rev. Alfred Kitchen, Rev. W. Bingham, and Rev. Norman McLeod, participated in the official dedication of the campsite, including the brand new "Norman Dabbs Memorial Lodge". About 300 people attended the ceremony that day on land that had been purchased for $3,000 four years earlier. That summer, there were 3 scheduled week-long camps for ages 9-11, 12-14, and 15 and older. The campers slept in rented tents! It wasn't until the next summer that washrooms and six cabins were built, and hydro lines and a water system were installed - all by volunteers.
